Suggestions for a Daily Practice

How often do you look at other people and think “wow, I wish my lifestyle was more like that!” We’ve probably all been there to some degree, and that’s normal.

Taking inspiration from other people’s routines is great, however we need to make sure it is accessible and do-able for us. It’s all well and good setting a goal to take 3 hours in the morning to practice yoga, meditate, journal and whatnot, but does this realistically work for you?

Read on to hear about my daily morning practice.

I try to wake up with natural light, leaving the curtains open to the sunlight. This might take time to get used to at first, but waking up when the sun rises is so lovely - it helps you to live more in tune with nature, rather than relying on artificial light or the buzz of your alarm. Rising with the natural light instill a sense of calm and clarity, whereas when we rely on technology to wake us up it can leave us feeling a little anxious or out of sync. 

Before I do anything, I take a moment to pause and just be. It can be so tempting to roll out of bed and straight into scrolling through your phone, or chatting to someone. Allow for a little silence in the morning.

The next thing I do is take a shower, then slowly sip some water. I think of this as a moment to refresh the system. There’s nothing like a shower in the morning to build your awareness up for the day, particularly if you are feeling a little more tired than usual.

I like to make time each morning to have a meaningful conversation with my partner - no work chat involved. I think it can be easy to let work dominate all conversations at home, and even more so now that many of us are working from home. So consciously making an effort to talk and connect over other matters is very important.

Daily meditation is non-negotiable for me, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Meditation doesn’t have to eat large chunks of time out of your day - but taking a few moments to close your eyes and just breathe can have such a positive impact on your day.

A moment of gratitude followed by a cup of warming tea sets me up nicely for whatever the day has in store for me.

Ultimately, your morning routine can be as long or as short as you need. Whether you follow my routine or take parts and leave others, the important thing is to find your own rhythm and begin your day on a positive and calm note.
